Fish Acclimation

1. Float the Bag
Float the sealed bag in your aquarium for 15 – 30 minutes to equalize temperature.

2. Begin Drip Acclimation
Gently pour the fish and shipping water into a clean container to prepare for drip acclimation. As a general rule for drip acclimation, use an ammonia reducer (unless the fish has been shipped in copper-treated water) if the fish has been in transit for more than a couple of hours. Start a slow drip using airline tubing, or add small amounts of aquarium water to the container every few minutes.

3. Acclimate Slowly
Continue for 30 – 60 minutes, until the amount of water in the container has doubled.

4. Transfer the Fish
Gently net the fish and place it into your aquarium.

Do NOT add shipping water to your tank

During shipping, ammonia can build up inside the bag while the pH drops. A lower pH helps keep ammonia less toxic. Once the bag is opened or aquarium water is slowly added, the pH can rise, making the ammonia more harmful. This is why we recommend using an ammonia reducer, such as Prime, when drip acclimating fish that have been in transit for more than a couple of hours, unless they were shipped in copper-treated water.
