The Blue Tang is one of the most iconic fish in the saltwater aquarium hobby, known for its vivid blue body, bold black markings, and bright yellow tail. Active and eye-catching, this tang is a constant swimmer that brings movement and color to a marine aquarium.
Because of its active nature, the Blue Tang does best in a spacious aquarium with plenty of open swimming room, live rock, and hiding places. Like many tangs, it may become territorial toward other tangs, especially those with a similar body shape. It is usually best to keep only one Blue Tang per aquarium unless multiple tangs are introduced at the same time into a large, established system.
Although the Blue Tang may accept meaty frozen foods, it should be offered plenty of marine-based seaweed and algae to support its long-term health and coloration. A varied diet of nori, marine algae, high-quality herbivore preparations, mysis shrimp, and enriched frozen foods is recommended.
This popular species can make a beautiful and hardy addition to a properly sized saltwater aquarium when given enough space, clean water, and a balanced diet.
