The Black Cap Basslet is a beautiful and hardy saltwater fish known for its rich purple coloration and bold black marking across the top of the head. Its striking contrast and sleek body shape make it a standout addition to reef aquariums, especially when displayed against live rock and coral.
This species comes from deeper reef areas of the Caribbean and does best in aquariums with plenty of rockwork, caves, and shaded hiding places. Once established, the Black Cap Basslet will usually claim a favorite spot in the rockwork and can often be seen hovering around ledges or even swimming upside down beneath overhangs.
Black Cap Basslets are generally peaceful, but they may show some territorial behavior toward similar-looking fish or other basslets. Providing enough space and hiding areas helps reduce aggression and allows this fish to feel secure. They are considered reef safe and should not bother corals or most invertebrates.
This fish adapts well to aquarium life and typically accepts a variety of meaty foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality marine pellets. A mature tank with stable water conditions and a well-structured aquascape will help this species thrive.
