Acanthurus achilles
The Achilles Tang, also known as the Achilles Surgeonfish or Red-Tailed Surgeonfish, is a stunning and highly sought-after tang known for its deep dark brown to purple body and bold orange and white accents. Its most recognizable feature is the bright orange teardrop marking near the tail, along with white highlights near the gill area and orange edging along the fins.
This species is extremely active and requires a large, well-established aquarium with plenty of open swimming space. Strong water movement and high water quality are important, as Achilles Tangs are naturally found in surge zones with heavy water flow.
The Achilles Tang can be aggressive toward other tangs and surgeonfish, especially in smaller systems, but it is typically peaceful with many other appropriately sized fish. It is generally reef safe and should not bother corals or most invertebrates.
A herbivore-focused diet is important for long-term health. Offer marine algae, nori, spirulina-based flakes or pellets, and occasional meaty frozen foods. Regular algae feedings help support coloration, immune health, and overall condition.
