Chaetodon striatus
The Caribbean Banded Butterflyfish is a beautiful and classic saltwater fish known for its clean black-and-white pattern and graceful swimming behavior. Its bright white body is marked with bold vertical black bands, a yellow dorsal area, and a dark eye stripe that gives it a striking, high-contrast appearance.
Native to the Western Atlantic and Caribbean, this butterflyfish is an active but generally peaceful species. It does best in a spacious aquarium with plenty of open swimming room, live rock for grazing, and hiding areas where it can feel secure. It can be a great addition to community fish-only or FOWLR aquariums with other peaceful tankmates.
Like most butterflyfish, the Caribbean Banded Butterflyfish is not considered reef safe, as it may nip at corals, anemones, and other sessile invertebrates. It should be offered a varied diet that includes frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and quality prepared foods made for marine fish.
