Bandtail puffer

The Bandtail Puffer (Sphoeroides spengleri) is a small and interesting saltwater pufferfish native to the western Atlantic, including the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and coastal waters of the southeastern United States.

In the aquarium, this species is known for its curious personality and active behavior. Like other puffers, the Bandtail Puffer has strong teeth that are adapted for crushing hard-shelled foods. Its diet should include a variety of meaty foods such as shrimp, clam, mussel, crab, and other marine-based foods. Offering harder foods can also help naturally wear down its continuously growing teeth.

The Bandtail Puffer may become aggressive toward smaller or more passive tankmates and can potentially nip at fins. It is also not considered reef safe, as it may prey on or damage snails, crabs, shrimp, and other invertebrates.

Provide plenty of rockwork, hiding areas, and open swimming space. As with other pufferfish, it may inflate its body when frightened or stressed, so unnecessary handling should be avoided.
