The Bluehead Wrasse is an active and brightly colored marine fish known for changing appearance as it matures. Juveniles are usually yellow with dark markings along the body and fins. Adult females are primarily turquoise with two noticeable dark bands, while mature males develop a striking blue head separated from the rest of the body by bold black-and-white bands. Their body coloration may include shades of blue-green and yellow.

Bluehead Wrasses can become territorial and may harass smaller, peaceful fish or newly introduced tank mates. They are best housed with larger, active species and should ideally be one of the last fish added to the aquarium.

In the wild, this species feeds on small fish, crustaceans, worms, and other mobile invertebrates. In captivity, it should receive a varied carnivorous diet that includes mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped marine seafood, and quality prepared foods. It may also hunt bristle worms and small crustaceans in the aquarium. Although it generally leaves corals and macroalgae alone, it may prey on ornamental shrimp, crabs, snails, and other small invertebrates.
