Macrocypraea cervus

The Atlantic Deer Cowrie is a beautiful and eye-catching marine snail known for its large, polished shell and unique patterning. Its shell is usually reddish-brown with pale, fawn-like spots, though coloration can vary between individuals. Some may show lighter bands or a more streaked appearance. The mantle is typically darker gray-brown and may cover much of the shell as the cowrie moves and grazes.

Cowries are popular with aquarists for their attractive appearance and helpful grazing behavior. Their smooth, oval-shaped shells have a naturally glossy look because the animal’s mantle helps protect and polish the shell.

In the aquarium, the Atlantic Deer Cowrie spends its time grazing on algae, film algae, and other organic matter from rockwork and surfaces. It does best in an established aquarium with plenty of natural algae growth to browse. Supplemental algae-based foods may be offered if the tank is very clean.

This species is generally reef safe and should not bother corals or most invertebrates. However, because it can grow larger than many common clean-up crew snails, it may accidentally move or knock over unsecured frags or lightweight decorations while grazing.
