The Jewel Damselfish (Microspathodon chrysurus) is a hardy and eye-catching saltwater fish with a bold personality. Juveniles are especially colorful, showing bright electric-blue markings and spots across the body. As they mature, their coloration changes into a deeper brown to dark tone with blue accents, giving them a completely different adult appearance.
Native to the Caribbean, Jewel Damsels are active, durable fish that do well in established saltwater aquariums. They are commonly seen exploring rockwork, claiming a favorite area, and defending their territory. While they are generally considered reef safe with corals, they can become territorial toward smaller or more peaceful tankmates, especially in smaller aquariums. Providing plenty of rockwork, caves, and hiding places can help reduce aggression.
Jewel Damselfish are not picky eaters and will usually accept a variety of prepared and frozen foods. A balanced diet of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped meaty foods, flakes, and pellets will help keep them healthy and active.
Their hardiness, unique color change from juvenile to adult, and active behavior make them a popular choice for hobbyists looking for a colorful and durable Caribbean fish.
