The Northern Pipefish is a unique and delicate species closely related to seahorses. With its long, slender body and slow, graceful movement, this fish makes a fascinating addition to peaceful, species-focused marine aquariums.
Native to seagrass beds, bays, and estuarine coastal waters, Northern Pipefish feel most secure in aquariums with plenty of structure, such as macroalgae, rockwork, or seagrass-style habitats. They do best in calm systems with gentle flow and little competition for food.
Northern Pipefish use their narrow snout to pick at tiny prey throughout the day. They should be offered small live or frozen foods such as copepods, enriched brine shrimp, and finely sized mysis shrimp. Because they are slow, deliberate feeders, they should not be housed with aggressive or fast-feeding tankmates.
Due to their specialized feeding needs and peaceful nature, Northern Pipefish are best suited for experienced aquarists or dedicated systems where they can be carefully observed and fed.
A truly interesting species that brings natural movement, elegance, and seagrass-bed behavior to a marine aquarium.
Our Northern Pipefish are currently feeding on frozen brine shrimp and mysis shrimp.
