Lytechinus variegatus
The Pin Cushion Urchin is a hardy and colorful marine urchin that makes a useful addition to saltwater clean-up crews. With its short spines, rounded body, and active grazing behavior, this urchin adds both function and movement to reef and fish-only aquariums.
Native to Caribbean and Florida waters, the Pin Cushion Urchin spends much of its time grazing on algae, biofilm, and other organic matter from rockwork and aquarium surfaces. It does best in established aquariums with stable water conditions and plenty of natural algae growth.
This species is peaceful and reef safe, but like many urchins, it may occasionally move loose frags, shells, or lightweight decorations while crawling. Secure coral frags and rockwork are recommended.
If natural algae becomes limited, supplemental foods such as nori, algae wafers, or other herbivore-based foods can be offered.
