The Four Eye Butterflyfish is a striking marine fish known for its bright yellow coloration, bold facial markings, and distinctive black “false eye” spot near the tail. This eye-like marking helps confuse predators in the wild and gives the fish its common name.
Native to the Caribbean and Western Atlantic, the Four Eye Butterflyfish is an active swimmer that does best in a spacious aquarium with plenty of open swimming room. Live rock is also recommended, as it provides natural grazing areas, shelter, and places for the fish to explore.
This species is generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive marine fish. It is best suited for fish-only aquariums or FOWLR setups. The Four Eye Butterflyfish is not considered reef safe, as it may nip at corals, anemones, and other stationary invertebrates.
Once established, it can adapt well to aquarium life when offered a varied diet. Feed a mix of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, high-quality frozen foods, and marine-based prepared foods formulated for butterflyfish.
